Charles Spencer reveals details on Elton John’s song choice for Princess Diana’s funeral
In his new biography, ‘Swan Song: Diana, My Sister’, Earl Spencer reveals new details regarding the musical selection for Princess Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997.
While Elton John’s performance of ‘Candle in the Wind’—reworked from its original dedication to Marilyn Monroe—became an iconic moment, the initial plan was for the singer to perform ‘Your Song’. According to Spencer, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson intervened by calling Elton John and suggesting he rewrite ‘Candle in the Wind’ to dedicate it to the Princess.
The proposal received support from the organist and choir master of Westminster Abbey, who encouraged the Palace to accept the idea via fax, believing the song would contribute to the inclusivity of the service for the public. Composer Bernie Taupin subsequently sent the revised lyrics to Elton John in Windsor.
