Charles University issues AI usage guidelines for academic theses

Charles University has issued new recommendations regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence in final academic theses. Because current technology cannot reliably detect AI-generated content, the university is implementing a tiered approach based on the extent of the tool's involvement in the work.

Under these guidelines, minimal use of AI is generally acceptable, while more significant involvement requires consultation with a thesis supervisor. The university recommends against the highest level of AI use, which includes generating entire sections of a paper, literature reviews, introductions, conclusions, or core analyses and interpretations. Students are expected to include a declaration specifying which AI tools were used and for what purpose. Failure to declare AI use or using it beyond permitted levels may result in negative thesis defense evaluations or disciplinary proceedings.
