Charleston County to conduct aerial mosquito spraying

Charleston County officials have scheduled aerial pesticide spraying to combat adult mosquito populations following confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in the area. The aerial application is set to occur early Sunday morning between 6:15 a.m. and 8:15 a.m., with a backup date scheduled for the following Sunday.

In addition to aerial treatments, the county is increasing truck-based spraying around catch basins and locations where high mosquito populations have been detected. The county will use Trumpet EC, a federally-approved product containing the active ingredient Naled. Officials noted that the early morning schedule is intended to minimize the impact on bees and people.

Mosquito control manager Brian Hayes stated that the surveillance program allows for quick responses to disease detection. Residents are advised to reduce risks by draining standing water, using insect repellent, and wearing protective clothing.
