Charleston nightlife shifts with Faculty Lounge closure and Reggie’s Tavern opening

The nightlife landscape in Charleston is experiencing a period of transition marked by the closure of a long-standing institution and the opening of a new neighborhood establishment.

Faculty Lounge, located at 391 Huger Street, has closed its doors. The venue held significant historical value, having served as a gathering place for African-American teachers in the 1970s before evolving into a community-focused bar and nightclub. Owner Joe Major had previously worked to preserve its character as a space for music and socialization.

In contrast, Reggie’s Tavern has opened in North Charleston at 2023 Reynolds Avenue. A collaboration involving the operators of Burns Alley and Legend Deli, the new bar and grill offers a Chicago-influenced menu featuring items such as Chicago-style dogs, Reubens, and fried pork sandwiches. The venue aims to provide a casual, unpretentious atmosphere with a rock-oriented soundtrack and vintage-inspired decor.
