Charleston Police Department adds 12 officers, biggest class since 2005
The Charleston Police Department in West Virginia sworn in 12 probationary officers, the largest single addition to the force since 2005. Chief Scott Dempsey said the new officers raise the department’s strength to 158 officers, with a budgeted ceiling of 173.
Dempsey highlighted integrity, compassion and dedication as core qualities for recruits and noted that word‑of‑mouth remains the most effective recruiting tool. He also unveiled a new recruiting video aimed at appealing to visual‑oriented candidates. The new officers will undergo a four‑week orientation before attending the State Police Academy in early September, preparing them for full duty in the city.
