Charlevoix Marine Forest gets first effective conservation status in Quebec
The Marine Forest in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, covering 36.7 hectares, has been designated as an "Other Effective Conservation Measure" (AMCE), the first such recognition in the Capitale‑Nationale. The certification was presented by the Musée maritime de Charlevoix and the Charlevoix Biosphere Reserve, with Quebec Minister Kariane Bourassa in attendance.
The area, owned by the museum since 2005, hosts over 80 bird species and 67 plant species, and about 60% of the land is part of a high‑priority forest complex. The designation highlights the site's role in linking forest and Saint‑Lawrence River coastal habitats, stabilising slopes, improving water quality, and sequestering carbon.
