Charli XCX portrait joins National Portrait Gallery collection

The National Portrait Gallery in London has added a new portrait of British pop artist Charli XCX to its collection. The photograph, taken by British photographer Harley Weir in 2023/2024, was acquired through the Gallery’s contemporary acquisitions fund, Collecting the Now, which is supported by a £1 million gift from the Bukhman Foundation—founded by Russian‑born entrepreneurs Igor and Anastasia Bukhman. Senior curator of photographs Brandei Estes said the gallery is "delighted" to acquire the image, describing Charli XCX as a defining cultural figure of her generation. The portrait is on display in the History Makers space and joins other recent acquisitions funded by the same gift, such as works by Barbara Walker and Linder.

The acquisition highlights the Gallery’s effort to document contemporary visual culture and reflects the Bukhman Foundation’s commitment to supporting public institutions while preserving both present and past artistic heritage.
