Charlie Frómeta, Venezuelan musician and arranger, dies at 82

Luis Vicente "Charlie" Frómeta, a prominent Venezuelan composer, arranger, and orchestra director, passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday, August 8, 2026, on Margarita Island.

Known as the "Frómeta Mayor," he was dedicated to preserving the musical legacy of his father, Billo Frómeta, the founder of the iconic tropical orchestra Billo's Caracas Boys. While he maintained a distinguished professional career in agronomy, earning a doctorate, his musical contributions remained central to Venezuelan culture. After studying at the Berklee College of Music, he returned to Venezuela to work on jingles, arrangements, and notable works such as the cumbia "Te fuiste."

The Billo's Caracas Boys orchestra released a statement describing him as the "absolute guardian of the rigor and history of the orchestra," noting his tireless defense of the group's musical catalog and its importance to Venezuela's cultural heritage.
