Charlie Hunnam explains artistic choice of stutter in Netflix series

Actor Charlie Hunnam has revealed that the stutter he portrays for the character Andrew Borden in the Netflix series ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ is a creative choice rather than a historical fact. Hunnam stated that there is no evidence in the historical record to suggest the real-life 1892 murder victim had a speech impediment.

The actor explained that the voice and stutter developed organically during his preparation. By reading the script repeatedly to memorize dialogue, the patterns of the stutter began to emerge naturally. While the show’s writers included one scripted moment where the character stammers under emotional strain, Hunnam noted that the rest of the trait was his own addition layered onto the performance.

The anthology series follows the story of Lizzie Borden, an heiress accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe in Massachusetts.
