Charlie Kirk family files claim against Utah officials over assassination
The family of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has filed a notice of claim against the State of Utah, Utah Valley University (UVU), and several officials, including UVU Police Chief Jeffrey Long. The filing, dated September 9, one year after Kirk's assassination, alleges that a series of 'stunning failures and reckless decisions' by university and state authorities left him vulnerable to a rooftop shooter.
Legal counsel for the family argues that the assassination was entirely preventable. The notice claims that Turning Point USA had specifically warned Chief Long about accessible student rooftops near the event location, to which Long reportedly responded, 'I got you covered.' Despite this assurance, the shooter, 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, was able to fire from a rooftop more than 400 feet away during an outdoor event attended by approximately 3,000 people.
Additional alleged security lapses include insufficient campus police staffing, the absence of bag checks or metal detectors, and a failure to use drones to monitor rooftops or coordinate with local law enforcement. The family's legal action seeks to preserve their ability to pursue wrongful death and 'state-created danger' claims under the U.S. Constitution.
