Charlie Kirk memorial at Utah Valley University faces planned protests
Conservative influencer and political activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor debate at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The shooting, which resulted in a single wound to the neck, led to a manhunt for the perpetrator, Tyler James Robinson, who surrendered to authorities a day later following a recommendation from his family.
The assassination has triggered significant political tension in the United States. While Republican leaders and President Donald Trump condemned the political violence, the event has also highlighted deep societal divisions.
A memorial event titled ‘Freedom Built to Last, Honoring Charlie Kirk’ is scheduled for September 10 at the university. Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk co-founded, will host the remembrance. However, several left-wing groups, including Students for a Democratic Society and the Community Defense Club of UVU, have announced plans to protest the memorial, citing opposition to Kirk’s views. In response to the potential for unrest, Utah Valley University administrators have announced that campus classes will be canceled on the day of the memorial to allow for reflection and healing.
