Charlie Kirk murder case: Defense seeks contempt sanctions on prosecutors

Tyler Robinson, the 23‑year‑old charged with aggravated murder of Turning Point USA co‑founder Charlie Kirk, is back in court as his attorneys accuse Utah prosecutors of violating a gag order. The defense alleges the prosecutors embarked on a “media tour,” commenting on a bullet fragment recovered from Kirk’s body, which they say breaches restrictions imposed by Judge Tony Graf.

Robinson’s lawyers request that Graf hold the prosecutors in contempt and consider sanctions, including the possibility of barring the state from seeking the death penalty. Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard countered that “the rules expressly allow lawyers to set the record straight.” The judge has not yet ruled on the contempt motion and will decide later. A key hearing is scheduled for next month when prosecutors must present enough evidence to proceed to trial, while the defense seeks to halt the process pending appeal of a prior order on courtroom cameras.
