Tyler Robinson trial timeline disputed in Charlie Kirk murder case

A legal dispute has emerged regarding the trial timeline for Tyler Robinson, who is accused of the aggravated murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Robinson, 23, was charged following the September 2025 shooting of Kirk at Utah Valley University.

Robinson’s defense team has requested that the trial begin in the third quarter of 2029, citing the need to review tens of thousands of documents, conduct extensive investigations, and prepare for a potential death penalty sentencing phase. They anticipate the trial could last six to seven months.

In contrast, Utah County prosecutors stated they could be ready as early as October 4, 2027, though they recommended a start date of January 31, 2028, to avoid winter weather and major holidays. Prosecutors expect the trial to last approximately 17 weeks.

Erika Kirk, the widow of the activist, has filed a motion requesting the court set the trial for as early as possible in 2027. Her attorney, Jeffrey Neiman, argued that a 2029 start date would cause unnecessary delay and harm to the couple's two young children.

Judge Tony Graf presided over a hearing to address these competing timelines but did not set a final date, scheduling a follow-up hearing for November 9.
