Charlotte City Council approves 10 p.m. curfew for minors
The Charlotte City Council has approved a new citywide curfew for all individuals under the age of 18, effective November 1. The measure, passed in a 9-2 vote, will serve as a 10-month pilot program running through August 31, 2027.
Under the new ordinance, minors must be indoors by 10 p.m. This replaces previous regulations that applied different times to different age groups and expands the curfew to include 16- and 17-year-olds. Exemptions are permitted for employment, school activities, religious events, emergencies, or when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
City leaders implemented the change following concerns regarding large teenage gatherings and street takeovers. CMPD Chief Estella Patterson stated that the primary goal is to provide legal grounds to address disruptive behavior rather than mass arrests. Patterson committed that officers will not stop vehicles or detain teenagers solely on the suspicion of a curfew violation, emphasizing a desire for voluntary compliance and parental involvement.
