Charlotte Knobloch warns of AfD dangers and Nazi parallels

Charlotte Knobloch, the 93-year-old president of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria and a Holocaust survivor, has warned of the growing danger posed by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In an interview with Stern magazine, Knobloch drew parallels between the current trajectory of the AfD and the rise of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) in the 1930s, noting that while the organizations differ, the pattern of testing political boundaries and increasing radicalism is similar.

Knobloch emphasized that the AfD is more dangerous than previous far-right groups such as the NPD, Republicans, or DVU, which she noted had appeared and disappeared. She expressed concern over rising antisemitism and questioned the effectiveness of the judiciary in addressing political incitement.

Ahead of upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the AfD shows strong polling numbers, Knobloch called for the use of radical means to combat political radicalism. She specifically recommended re-examining the legal process to ban the party, even though she expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of such a ban succeeding.
