Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reinstates Superintendent Crystal Hill

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) board has reinstated Superintendent Crystal Hill following a nearly two-month paid leave. The suspension, which began in June, followed an investigation into Hill’s administrative and operational oversight of the district, North Carolina’s second-largest school system.

CMS Board Chair Stephanie Sneed announced the decision after a thorough and independent review by an outside law firm. While Hill is returning to her position to provide continuity and stability, Sneed noted that the investigation identified issues requiring ongoing attention and close supervision by the board. The board has not disclosed the specific findings or the exact nature of the allegations, though previous reports suggested concerns regarding the awarding of contracts worth over $1.7 million to former colleagues.

Sneed stated that the board believes returning Hill is the best pathway forward for the district as they prepare for the upcoming school year. The reinstatement was not a unanimous decision among board members.
