Charlotte Rampling condemns destruction of grandfather's grave in Iraq
British actress Charlotte Rampling has expressed outrage over the destruction of her grandfather's grave in Basra, Iraq. Horace Johnson Rampling, who died of heatstroke during World War I in 1917, was among hundreds of soldiers whose headstones were removed from the British military cemetery in Basra during the 2003 Iraq War.
While the British Army initially removed over 800 headstones and 80 engraved panels to protect them from potential local vandalism, investigations revealed that the stones were not reinstalled as planned. Instead, within 18 months, they were allegedly crushed into gravel to be used as drainage fill for a nearby British military base. This action has left approximately 3,000 graves in the cemetery without markers.
Rampling joined calls from former military leaders, including Lord Richard Dannatt and Lord Richards of Herstmonceux, for the Ministry of Defence to restore the cemetery or establish a new memorial. She described the situation as "absolutely shameful" and expressed support for any initiative to create a lasting place of remembrance.
