Charlton Athletic defeat Derby County as Lloyd Jones signs new deal

Charlton Athletic secured a 2-1 comeback victory against Derby County in their opening Championship match at The Valley. Derby took an early lead in the 23rd minute through a goal by Sammie Szmodics, following a combination with Carlton Morris.

Charlton responded before halftime when skipper Lloyd Jones headed in an equalizer from a Karlan Grant cross. The winning goal arrived in the 80th minute, scored by winger Tyreece Campbell after a through ball from substitute Joe Rankin-Costello.

In related club news, defender Lloyd Jones has signed a new two-year contract with Charlton Athletic, extending his stay until June 2028. Jones, who joined from Cambridge United in June 2023, was a key figure in the club’s recent promotion from League One and recorded the highest number of clearances and aerial duel wins in the second tier last season.
