Charlton Athletic stadium death investigation
London's Metropolitan Police are investigating the death of a 33-year-old man discovered at The Valley, the home stadium of Championship club Charlton Athletic. The body was found on Tuesday morning following an incident reported in the early hours of Monday.
Investigators are currently exploring the possibility that the man fell from a height within the stadium. While the victim's identity has not been released, his family has been notified. Charlton Athletic issued a statement expressing their “deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences” to the family and confirmed they are cooperating fully with the authorities. The club stated there is “no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of the club.”
As a result of the discovery, a scheduled Under-21 match against Bolton Wanderers was relocated from the stadium to the club's training ground at Sparrows Lane. Police have requested that anyone with information or witnesses to the incident contact them using the reference 2809/18AUG.
