Charly Boy responds to Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks at memoir launch

Veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, known as Charly Boy, has responded to remarks made by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo during the London launch of his memoir, ‘999’. During the event, Obasanjo used several teasing terms to describe the entertainer, including “ashawo,” “thief,” “barawo,” and “drug addict.”

Charly Boy stated on X that he is not offended by the comments, interpreting them as a sign of the close and familiar relationship between him and the former president. He clarified that the term “ashawo” should not be taken literally or as an accusation of prostitution. He noted that living a non-conformist life has led people to call him many names, such as “rebel” or “mad man,” and suggested that Obasanjo’s ability to tease him publicly is a sign of affection, akin to a father speaking to a stubborn son.

Charly Boy also acknowledged that Obasanjo has previously expressed respect for him, particularly regarding his devotion to his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, and his mother.
