Charminar monument suffers plaster damage after heavy rain in Hyderabad

A portion of the white cement plaster on the historic Charminar monument in Hyderabad’s Old City peeled off and fell following approximately 30 minutes of continuous rainfall. The affected section faces Laad Bazaar, one of the busiest areas surrounding the 430-year-old structure.

Security personnel responded to the incident by clearing debris and cordoning off the area to ensure visitor safety. The Archaeological Survey of India, which oversees the monument's maintenance, is expected to assess the damage and determine necessary restoration measures. This incident follows a similar occurrence in April 2025 involving stucco work on a minaret, renewing concerns regarding the impact of water seepage and heavy monsoon rains on the integrity of the landmark built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah.
