Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria seeks census and curriculum reforms

The Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON) is advocating for two major reforms: the introduction of statistics into the secondary school curriculum and a comprehensive overhaul of the national census process.

CISON President Dr. Godwin Ebuh announced that the Federal Ministry of Education has committed to including statistics in the next curriculum review. The initiative aims to improve statistical literacy among youth and reduce the apprehension many students feel toward mathematics and data.

Additionally, the institute has called on the Federal Government to prioritize a fresh population and housing census. Noting that Nigeria’s last official census was conducted in 2006, Ebuh warned that relying on estimates rather than accurate demographic data hinders effective economic planning, resource allocation, and public policy development. He urged the government to implement reforms that ensure censuses are conducted seamlessly every ten years.
