Chartered Management Institute report highlights youth skills gap

A report by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) indicates a significant skills gap among young people entering the workforce. A study of 1,100 managers found that half had encountered young employees lacking essential practical skills, such as punctuality and professional communication. Additionally, 40% of managers reported a mismatch between educational training and the practical requirements of their jobs.

Petra Wilton, director of policy at the CMI, noted that young people often face a “rude awakening” regarding employer expectations. The CMI suggests that these competencies should be developed through apprenticeships, mentoring, and work experience rather than placing blame on younger generations.

In response to youth unemployment challenges, supermarket chain Sainsbury's has announced a scheme to provide work experience opportunities to approximately 10,000 young people from disadvantaged areas. Starting in October, this initiative will include workplace visits, career workshops, and practical placements across England, Scotland, and Wales.
