Chascomús experiences rapid growth through internal migration

Chascomús is experiencing a significant demographic shift driven by internal migration rather than birth rates. Between January and June of this year, the district recorded 120 births but welcomed 600 new residents who formally established residency in the area.

Mayor Javier “Chapa” Gastón noted that this trend, which has intensified since the COVID-19 pandemic, is fueled by the rise of teleworking and a desire for a lifestyle closer to nature while remaining near major urban centers. Many new residents are relocating from the City of Buenos Aires and the Greater Buenos Aires area.

The population has grown by 20% between the penultimate census and the most recent records. This influx presents urban management challenges, particularly regarding the expansion of the urban footprint and the need for infrastructure. Local authorities are working to ensure that private developers provide necessary services, such as water and sewage, before new projects are integrated into the urban grid.
