Chase-Falkland Road residents protest road resurfacing downgrade

Residents of the Shuswap region are expressing frustration over the recent resurfacing of the Chase-Falkland Road, describing the work as a “bait and switch” project. While the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) announced an investment of over $136 million to resurface interior highways and local roads to ensure safe driving, locals claim the 28.7-kilometre stretch was not given the promised asphalt.

Instead, the road has been treated with a seal coating consisting of loose rocks mixed with oil and pressed down with a roller. Residents, including Jeff Seabrook, report that the resulting surface is jagged and unstable, causing significant damage to vehicles. The loose rocks are reportedly acting like shrapnel, causing chips and dents in vehicle bodies and prematurely wearing down tires.
