AI chatbots increasingly used for spiritual and emotional support
The rise of artificial intelligence is reshaping how individuals seek emotional support and spiritual guidance. As chatbots become more sophisticated, users are increasingly turning to them for companionship, therapy, and answers to existential questions.
In India, some people are using AI to find peace of mind during grief, noting that platforms like ChatGPT offer non-judgmental, 24/7 accessibility that human gurus may not provide. This trend has led some spiritual leaders, such as Sadhguru and Deepak Chopra, to launch their own AI-driven platforms to disseminate their teachings.
However, experts and spiritual leaders have raised concerns regarding the impact on human relationships. Psychologist Ivana Zamora Tarira warns that while AI can temporarily alleviate loneliness, it risks becoming an emotional refuge that replaces real human bonds. Similarly, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living, stated that no machine can replicate true human connection or the deeper intelligence arising from consciousness, emphasizing that technology should enable wisdom and joy rather than just providing comfort.
