Chateau Diana Winery replaces grapevines with sunflowers amid industry struggles

Chateau Diana Winery in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, has replaced an acre of Zinfandel grapevines with more than 3,000 sunflowers. Co-owner Corey Manning stated the move is an effort to adapt to a challenging market characterized by an oversupply of grapes and shifting consumer preferences, particularly among younger adults who are consuming less wine.

The sunflower field serves as a new attraction to draw visitors to the winery. This pivot comes amid broader trends in California’s wine country; according to the California Association of Winegrape Growers, over 2,700 acres of vines were removed in Sonoma County between October 2024 and August 2025 as growers respond to changing economic conditions.
