ChatGPT leads global app downloads amid rising AI governance concerns

In August 2026, ChatGPT remained the world's most downloaded app with 78 million new installations across Android and iOS, matching its July performance. India leads ChatGPT's market share at 21%, followed by the United States at 11% and Brazil at 5%. The OpenAI tool has reached a cumulative 2.1 billion downloads.

TikTok ranked second in downloads with 66 million monthly installs, representing a 5% increase from July. TikTok also led in app store revenue, generating an estimated US$ 373 million, while ChatGPT followed closely with US$ 366 million. Meta maintained a strong presence in the top 10 with four apps: WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business.

DramaWave, a vertical drama application, emerged as a notable trend with 25 million downloads in August, a 39% increase from the previous month.

Parallel to these market trends, discussions regarding AI governance have intensified. Experts note that the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence is outpacing the ability of governments to establish regulatory frameworks. Bill Gates has emphasized the need for a global plan to manage the era of AI, noting that its benefits and negative impacts are arriving simultaneously, unlike previous technological revolutions.
