ChatGPT loses market share as rivals Gemini and Claude surge

According to a Sensor Tower report, ChatGPT's share of the AI chatbot market fell below 50 % for the first time, dropping to 46.4 % despite 1.1 billion monthly active users. Gemini, developed by Google, moved into second place with a 27.7 % share and 662 million users, while Anthropic's Claude holds 10.3 % with 245 million users. Other models such as Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Meta AI together account for less than 5 % of usage.

The shift reflects growing user willingness to switch between AI tools, especially after OpenAI’s contract with the U.S. Department of Defense sparked some users to explore alternatives. The data highlights a rapidly diversifying AI landscape where ChatGPT’s longstanding dominance is being challenged by emerging competitors.
