OpenAI expands ChatGPT with desktop features and proactive AI plans
OpenAI is expanding the capabilities of ChatGPT through new desktop integrations and proactive AI features. A new “Computer History” function for the macOS desktop application allows the assistant to track computer activity to better understand user context, suggest automations, and complete tasks. While users can manually enable this and exclude specific apps, the feature has raised privacy concerns similar to Windows Recall.
Looking ahead, Sam Altman has indicated that a successor to ChatGPT may be able to continuously observe screens, record meetings, and integrate deeply with tools like Slack and email to act as a proactive personal assistant. This evolution aims to move the AI beyond a simple chat interface into an all-knowing digital companion.
In addition to these developments, official desktop applications for Windows are available to provide more direct access to the tool without a browser. However, experts warn about the security risks of account sharing to save on premium costs, noting that sharing login credentials can expose sensitive personal data and compromise other linked services.
