Chatham Islands begins construction of new supply vessel

Construction has commenced on a new supply vessel for the Chatham Islands, with delivery expected in late 2027. The project began with steel cutting for the hull on September 17. The new ship, being built in China by a joint venture between McCallum Bros and Nova Marine Carriers, is intended to replace the Southern Tiare, which is nearing 40 years of age and has faced maintenance issues.

The vessel will transport livestock, fuel, vehicles, and bulk freight between mainland New Zealand, the Chatham Islands, and Pitt Island, supporting local fishing, farming, and tourism sectors. To address immediate needs, the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport has partnered with McCallum Bros to refit the William Fraser as an interim livestock carrier to clear existing backlogs.
