Zelenskyy visits Canada to secure air defense and energy aid
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is conducting an official three-day visit to Canada, marking his first trip to the country in 2026. During the visit, Zelenskyy met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to reaffirm the enduring friendship between the two nations and discuss critical security needs.
Canada has committed to providing a significant new air defense package to Ukraine, which Zelenskyy described as “very important” and “crucial” as the country faces intensified Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks. The package is intended to bolster Ukraine’s ability to protect its people and energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season. Additionally, Canada will support Project Freya, a pan-European initiative to develop high-volume interceptors to counter Russian ballistic missiles.
Beyond military aid, discussions focused on deepening cooperation in the energy and economic sectors. Canada has provided over C$25.5 billion in total aid to Ukraine since the February 2022 invasion, including approximately C$8.5 billion in military support. Prime Minister Carney also confirmed the extension of Operation UNIFIER until 2029 to continue Canadian Armed Forces training for Ukrainian forces. The leaders signed a 100-Year Partnership Declaration, aiming to transition their relationship into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership covering defense industry, reconstruction, and energy connectivity.
