Chatham School District faces lawsuit over gender transition policies

Moms for Liberty is pursuing legal action against New Jersey’s Chatham School District, seeking to mandate that administrators notify parents regarding their children’s asserted gender transitions and social transition-related accommodations. The group argues that current district policies violate Supreme Court precedents, specifically citing the Mirabelli and Mahmoud rulings which emphasized parental rights and notification requirements.

In response to parental demands, Chatham School Board President Ann Ciccarelli stated during a June 15 meeting that a recent Supreme Court emergency order is “not binding” on New Jersey public schools. The district maintains policies that include accepting a student’s asserted gender identity regardless of parental consent, as well as mandatory use of preferred pronouns.

Moms for Liberty CEO Tina Descovich characterized the district's actions as an “assault on the constitutional rights of every family in that district.” Meanwhile, critics and LGBTQ publications have expressed concern that the litigation aims to expose students' identities.
