Chaumont prison fire and Schaerbeek warehouse blaze prompt emergency responses

On the night of 6 August, a fire broke out in a cell on the second floor of the Chaumont prison in France. Eighteen firefighters, led by Lieutenant Damien Bailly, responded with two pump‑tanker trucks, a large ladder, a rescue vehicle and a command unit. A detainee had ignited paper; prison staff initially extinguished the flames. The victim was examined for smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalisation.

Later that evening in Schaerbeek, Brussels, Belgium, a warehouse on Rue du Brabant caught fire, prompting the activation of a municipal emergency plan. Four fire‑engine trucks and two ladder trucks were deployed, and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. The blaze, involving mattresses and textiles, was contained by around midnight with no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
