Cheb railway station to undergo major architectural restoration
The Cheb railway station in the Czech Republic is set for a major reconstruction aimed at restoring its original 1962 architectural character. Designed by Josef Danda, the station is a protected monument, and architects from Ateliér A8000 intend to preserve its mid-century modern identity by restoring original colors, materials, and artworks.
The renovation will focus on the main hall, removing later modifications to reveal stone floors, ceramic tiles, and historical furniture. Key artistic elements, including stained glass by Zdeněk J. Holub and glass mosaics by Jaroslav Moravec, will be restored. The project also includes modernizing the building's energy efficiency through solar panels and installing elevators for full accessibility.
A notable addition to the project is the transformation of the station's seventh-floor tower into a public multifunctional space. Referred to by architects as a ‘beacon over Cheb,’ this area will offer panoramic views of the city and could serve as a cafe, exhibition space, or cultural venue. The project, commissioned by Správa železnic, is being executed by Berger Bohemia and Metrostav DIZ at a cost of 428 million CZK, with completion expected in 2028.
