Checa women publish book documenting rural female legacy
The Asociación de Mujeres de Checa has released a new book titled ‘Mujeres con voz propia’ (Women with their own voice) to document the historical contributions of women in the municipality of Checa, Guadalajara.
Created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of democracy in Spain, the project aims to rescue the stories of women involved in agriculture, livestock, and domestic life from rural silence. The publication was developed by the association's 58 members through a participatory process involving public document research and interviews with local women.
Teresa López Tomé, director of the Instituto de la Mujer, noted that the project provides inspiration for modern women to seek leadership roles in economic, social, and political spheres. She also highlighted regional efforts, such as the Statute of Rural Women and laws against depopulation, which have contributed to increased female participation in the rural workforce in Castilla-La Mancha.
