Checkmate Cabs relaunches in Kelowna under new ownership
Checkmate Cabs, a Kelowna-based taxi company operating since 1989, has officially relaunched under new ownership. The company had previously ceased operations in October 2025 due to financial difficulties and intense competition from ride-hailing services such as Uber and Uride.
Ashok Tyagi has acquired the business from longtime proprietor Tom Wiltshire. Tyagi, who previously served as the General Manager of a competitor, aims to revitalize the company by integrating modern technology while maintaining a focus on reliable, community-oriented service. The new leadership team intends to prioritize accessible transportation for seniors and residents who depend on traditional taxi services.
A transition celebration was held at the company’s office, attended by Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas and members of the City Council, who expressed support for the business's return to the local economy.
