Checkpoint Charlie redesign winner selected for Berlin memorial site

A winning design has been selected for the redesign of Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, transforming the historic Cold War crossing into a dedicated site for education and remembrance. The project aims to make the history of the East-West conflict visible and tangible while creating a high-quality, climate-adapted public urban space.

The first-prize design was submitted by the team of A24 LANDSCHAFT Landschaftsarchitektur GmbH (Berlin) in collaboration with Holzer Kobler Architekturen GmbH (Berlin) and ARGUS Stadt und Verkehr Partnerschaft mbB (Hamburg). The winning concept was praised for its interpretation of the site’s historical atmosphere through the use of existing relics supplemented by new, precisely placed artifacts.

The redesign is supported by 1.65 million euros provided by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The future memorial site will be managed by the Berlin Wall Foundation (Stiftung Berliner Mauer). The competition, which was open across Europe, saw 22 teams participate in the process.
