Chee Kit “Max” Chong, 47, has been sentenced to six years in prison by the County Court of Victoria for the enslavement and assault of a 61-year-old Malaysian woman in Melbourne.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Chong held the woman captive in his home from January 2022 until she escaped in October 2022. During this period, he controlled her access to the outside world and coerced her into performing unpaid domestic labor, including cleaning and childcare, under threats of hunger or physical assault.

The victim, who had a long-standing relationship with Chong dating back to Malaysia, was exploited through financial, physical, and psychological coercion. Judge Michael Cahill described the treatment as “callous and cruel,” noting that Chong exploited the woman's vulnerabilities to treat her as property.

Chong must serve four years before being eligible for parole and faces potential deportation to Malaysia upon completion of his sentence. His partner, Angie Liaw, was acquitted of all charges related to the case.
