Cheese Farm Schellach Implements Cooling Systems for Cows Amid Heatwave

At the Schellach cheese farm near Middelburg, Zeeland, operators have introduced multiple measures to protect cows from summer heat stress. Cows are mist‑sprayed while waiting in the milking area, then guided past large fans that promote evaporation and further cooling. The open‑plan barn features a special “paraplu‑dak” roof that maximizes ventilation, with side screens that can be closed when sunshine is intense.

Farm manager Niels Mesu notes that on very hot, windless days the animals show signs of distress, but the mist and airflow noticeably calm them. Despite these actions, milk yields fall by about three litres per cow on hot days as the animals divert energy to stay cool. The ideal summer temperature for the farm is around 20‑25 °C, which balances comfort for both cows and staff.
