Cheetah conservation efforts focus on habitat loss and population monitoring

Research from the Cheetah Conservation Fund reveals that a 2021 wildfire in Namibia’s Omaheke region caused a landscape-scale decline in savanna wildlife. The fire, which covered 650 km2, led mammals to progressively abandon both the burned areas and the surrounding habitats. Smaller, less mobile species and grazers like oryx and eland were hit particularly hard as forage disappeared.

In South Africa, the Endangered Wildlife Trust and SANParks are conducting the Greater Kruger Cheetah Photographic Census from September 2026 to August 2027. This initiative uses unique coat patterns in visitor photographs to identify individual cheetahs, track their movements, and monitor survival rates. This data is vital for understanding population stability and cub longevity within the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
