Chef Rubio convicted of defamation in Rome court

The Court of Rome has convicted Gabriele Rubini, known as ‘Chef Rubio’, for defamation against journalist David Parenzo. The ruling follows a tweet Rubini posted on X on October 12, 2023, shortly after the Hamas attacks on October 7.

In the post, Rubini addressed Parenzo regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, using terms such as ‘supremacist’, ‘anti-Muslim’, ‘anti-Arab’, and ‘antisemitic’. The court ordered Rubini to pay a fine of 1,200 euros and a provisional sum of 5,000 euros to Parenzo, who acted as a civil party in the case.

Judges from the tenth section excluded aggravating factors related to the attribution of a specific fact or the intent of racial or religious discrimination and hatred. This sentence was lighter than the 12-month prison term requested by the prosecution.
