Chega party gains support in Portugal, nearing Socialist Party lead
The right-wing Chega party is gaining significant momentum in Portugal, according to recent polling by Pitagorica. The party, led by Andre Ventura, has reached 27.1% support, a 5-percentage-point increase since the May 2025 parliamentary elections.
Chega is now closely trailing the leading opposition Socialist Party (PS), which holds 27.9% support. The center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) coalition, led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, follows in third place with 25.7%.
Despite the rising popularity, Chega lacks the parliamentary strength to topple the current government. A recent motion of no confidence initiated by the party received support from only 60 deputies, all of whom belong to Chega.
