Chega party leads Portuguese national opinion poll

The right-wing populist party Chega has led a national opinion poll in Portugal for the first time. According to the latest Aximage survey, Chega secured 30.7% of the vote, placing it ahead of the Socialist Party (PS), which received 28.7%.

The governing Aliança Democrática (AD) coalition follows in third place with 21.7%. Other parties in the poll included Iniciativa Liberal (5.6%), LIVRE (3.3%), and PAN (2%).

Led by André Ventura, Chega focuses its platform on stricter border controls, national sovereignty, traditional values, and law and order. The party has seen significant growth since its founding in 2019, moving from a single mandate to becoming a major political force. Its policy positions include prioritizing immigrants from Portuguese-speaking and Christian countries, tightening citizenship requirements, and criticizing European Union migration policies.
