Chega proposes IRS tax exemption for Madeira minimum wage earners

The Chega party has announced a proposal for the 2027 State Budget aimed at exempting workers in Madeira who earn the regional minimum wage from IRS income tax. The initiative, developed by the party’s regional structure and deputy Francisco Gomes, seeks to address what it describes as a fiscal injustice.

Currently, the government’s budget proposal sets a reference minimum existence of 13,580 euros annually, based on 14 national minimum wages. Because Madeira and the Azores have higher regional minimum wages, Chega argues that these workers may face tax penalties despite earning low incomes. The proposal suggests amending Article 70 of the IRS Code to ensure that in Madeira and the Azores, the reference minimum existence is not lower than 14 times the respective region's minimum wage.
