Chega questions Portuguese government over healthcare shortages

The Chega parliamentary group has submitted formal inquiries to the Portuguese Ministry of Health regarding critical shortages and organizational changes in specialized medical services across several regions.

In the Baixo Alentejo and Algarve regions, deputies raised concerns over a shortage of hematologists. They noted that services in Beja and Portimão appear to rely on a single physician or a limited number of service providers. The party criticized the lack of permanent vacancies and incentives to attract professionals to these areas, arguing that heavy reliance on service contracts prevents the formation of stable medical teams and threatens the quality of care within the National Health Service (SNS).

Additionally, Chega has requested details regarding the reorganization of oncology units in Portalegre and Elvas, effective October 1. The inquiries seek clarification on the new service models, including clinical activity volumes, contracted costs, and the expected impact on patient capacity. The deputies aim to determine if these changes will reduce structural dependence on external service providers and improve response times for oncology patients.
