Chega/Açores proposes new Social Security protections for fishermen

The political party Chega/Açores is advocating for a more equitable Social Security regime for fishermen in the Azores. The party intends to submit a preliminary legislative proposal to the Assembly of the Republic to strengthen social protection and rights for workers in the sector.

Regional deputies José Pacheco and Olivéria Santos met with the Sindicato Livre dos Pescadores dos Açores in Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, to discuss the difficulties faced by professionals in the industry. The union has called for changes to the current system to bring it closer to the general Social Security regime, ensuring greater security during active professional life and upon retirement.

José Pacheco, the president and parliamentary leader of Chega/Açores, emphasized that fishing is a high-risk activity essential to the economy and identity of the Azores. He stated that the party aims to create a regime that is “more just, balanced and suited to the specific reality of the profession.”
