Chehalis Tribes implement fishing permit requirements on Chehalis River

The Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation have implemented a permit requirement for non-tribal members fishing in an approximately 10-mile stretch of the Chehalis River between Oakville and Helsing Junction. The tribe is charging $45 for bank fishing permits and $500 for boat permits, warning that those without permits could face fines of $500 and the seizure of their watercraft or gear.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) disputes the tribe’s authority to cite anglers in this area, maintaining that the Chehalis River is classified as a federally navigable waterbody. Under state and federal law, public access is typically allowed on navigable waters below the ordinary high-water mark.

WDFW is currently in discussions with tribal leadership, the state Attorney General’s Office, and local law enforcement regarding the dispute. In the interim, the agency has advised anglers and guides to temporarily avoid this section of the river or to refrain from anchoring, wading, or fishing while floating through the area to avoid potential citations.
