Cheikh Hamidou Kane, influential Senegalese author, dies at 98

Senegalese writer and statesman Cheikh Hamidou Kane has died in Dakar at the age of 98. A prominent intellectual voice in Africa, Kane was best known for his 1961 novel, ‘L’Aventure ambiguë’ (The Ambiguous Adventure).

The novel, which was translated into at least 40 languages and received the Grand Prix littéraire d’Afrique noire in 1962, explores the existential and cultural tensions of an African individual navigating the intersection of Islamic spiritual upbringing and Western education.

Born in Matam in 1928 into a family of Fulani chiefs and Muslim scholars, Kane studied law and philosophy in Paris. He later served in senior government roles in Senegal, holding ministerial positions under Presidents Léopold Sédar Senghor and Abdou Diouf.
