Cheikhou Kouyate retires after revealing lifelong heart condition

Senegalese midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The former Premier League player, known for his stints at West Ham United, Crystal Palace, and Nottingham Forest, revealed that he competed throughout his entire career while managing a congenital heart condition.

Kouyate stated that he had suffered from the heart problem since birth and chose not to disclose it to his family, national team doctors, or clubs to avoid being forced into early retirement. He noted that the condition caused pain and cramps, particularly in heat or high altitudes, and required medical monitoring every six months during his time in England. He was advised to retire by medical professionals during discussions regarding a potential return to Anderlecht.

Over a career spanning more than a decade in the Premier League, Kouyate made nearly 300 appearances in the English top flight. He was also a key member of the Senegal national team, helping the squad win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.
